Correctional Healthcare nursing is a challenging field which is part of a correctional healthcare delivery system which aspires to address needs of the chronically underserved local community. County Jails are where people are sent when they are first arrested. Most people in county jails have not been convicted of a crime, and a high percentage of the population are underserved, they are poor, disenfranchised, and mentally ill or have a substance use disorder. Many do not belong in jails but are there because presently there are no better alternatives.
The Registered Nurse (RN) delivers care to inmate patients utilizing the nursing assessment protocols in assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation, in accordance with established philosophy. RNs collaborate with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes. RNs effectively interact with patients, while maintaining the standard of professional nursing.
All care provided by is in accordance with the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) standards of care, NJ 10-A, American Correctional Association (ACA) and Performance Based National Detention Standards (PBNDS) as appropriate.
