Overview

In collaboration with the physician, this position is responsible for prescribing psychiatric medications and providing medication evaluations and medication management and for providing for the overall medical supervision, including psychotherapy to inmates of the Department of Corrections consistent with community standards of care.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts psychiatric evaluations on inmates of the Department of Corrections.  
  • Provides individual and group consultation and training to the mental health staff.   
  • May review and approve treatment plans on inmates.
  • Writes orders for medical medications and treatments, under guidelines of licensure..
  • Prescribes and monitors patient medications.
  • Provides consultation and training regarding medications to other members of the treatment team.
  • Writes or dictates case notes, discharge summaries and transfer orders.
  • Maintains and follows patient care protocols.
  • Works with members of the healthcare team in educating the patients of their mental health care.
  • Provides any necessary “on call” coverage.
  • Continually updates clinical knowledge and skills through consultation, formal and informal education and review of literature for the benefit of themselves as well as for the healthcare team.
  • All other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Must possess a Master’s Degree.
  • Must hold a current and Advanced Practice Nurse license for the state in which he/she will provide services and must specialize in Psychiatry or Mental Health. 
  • Must have at least one year experience of providing direct patient care. 
  • Must have prescriptive authority with current and valid DEA and CDS. 
  • Previous experience in a correctional setting preferred.
